Sun Hee You, piano

South Korean pianist Sun Hee You is a shining example of a new generation classical musician.

Trained in Seoul, she attended the Yewon School, the famous Korean musical institution for child prodigies, after winning several competitions from the early years of studying the piano. Sun Hee You made her solo debut at the age of 13 with the Yangeum Orchestra in Seoul, with Beethoven’s Concerto No.2 and Haydn’s Concerto in King Major. At the age of 14 she moved to Italy where she graduated from the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia and continued her studies with the legendary pianist Lazar Berman and Valentina Berman with the assistance of renowned artists such as Bruno Canino, Oxana Yablonskaya, Boris Petrushansky and Paul Badura-Skoda. She trained in chamber music at the Accademia Nazionale of Santa Cecilia with Rocco Filippini.

Her particular attention to the music of the 1900’s led her to be published for NAXOS with the recording of Alfredo Casella, in repertoires for the piano and orchestra, in particular La Partita for Piano and Orchestra, winning a Grammy Award nomination. She then switched to the Piano-Classics label for the album entirely dedicated to the Ukrainian composer Kapustin. This last record, a combination of classical and jazz in style and language, sold out just two days after the official release in Korea. Her research on new repertoires has intrigued some contemporary composers, one of the most talented of the last generation Marco Quagliarini dedicated her concert for Piano and Orchestra “Murale” published by Suvini Zerboni.

In addition to the traditional concert activity, commitment to special projects and high-level collaborations. She was Special Guest in the Alchemaya Tour of the singer-song writer Max Gazzè playing in important Italian arenas such as the Baths of Caracalla, the Sferisterio of Macerata, the Arena of Verona, and the Ancient Theater of Taormina, bringing the music of Rachmaninov, one of her composers’ favorites, to a very large pop audience. The new single Chandeliers was recently released, with the idea of giving a message of hope in this pandemic period. The music is written by Hyung-ki Joo, just after 9/11 while the composer was living in New York. Together with the single, the video clip was made, written, and directed by the artist herself, shot in a suggestive place abandoned after the earthquake in Abruzzo.
